« Beneath the vibrant colors lies a psychological nightmare...! »
We tested the demo for TADC: Mind Games, a visual novel developed by Pitchbox Studios. A quick reminder mandated by the game itself right from the title screen: this is an unofficial, non-canon fan creation based on The Amazing Digital Circus universe. The premise is simple but incredibly effective: you find a dusty old VR headset, put it on, and instantly find yourself trapped in the digital tent facing a rather... unstable Caine.
WHAT WE LOVED
This demo is a true horror love letter to the original work. The developers perfectly understood the essence of TADC while pushing it into its darkest corners.
Breathtaking art direction and artwork
If there is one thing you have to take your hat off to, it is the art direction and the graphics. Transitioning from an original 3D work to a 2D game is no easy feat, but the result is sublime. The artwork is gorgeous, ultra-colorful, and perfectly respects the character designs. The main menu immediately sets the tone with a completely unhinged Caine. The interface is polished and blends seamlessly into the universe.
Dynamic animations and an oppressive soundscape
For a visual novel, the screen is rarely static. The sprite animations literally bring the characters to life. Paired with immersive music and sound design, the game successfully creates a feeling of unease.
Faithful writing elevated by graphic horror
The writing is a major strong point. The personalities of the protagonists are captured perfectly (Pomni's chronic anxiety, Kinger's delusional spacing out, Caine's eccentricity). But where the game truly shines is in its shift toward horror. The game features body horror: seeing Pomni's head replaced by a carnivorous mask that bites your arm, watching Caine transform, or coming across hunting trophies made from the characters' heads... it is terrifying.
A captivating story with multiple endings
The story seems genuinely interesting and encourages player exploration. Throughout the game, you can make several choices: search an air vent, follow Kinger's questionable plans, or flee blindly. This offers very good replayability, especially for a demo, with numerous endings to discover. This holds a lot of promise for the final content of the game, which will almost certainly feature plenty of other endings and storylines to uncover.
THE DOWNSIDES
Given its status as a fangame and the chosen genre, the flaws are minimal but worth highlighting for informed players:
- The visual novel genre can be divisive: the gameplay relies almost exclusively on reading and dialogue choices. If you are looking for action or platforming, this game is not for you. It is a purely narrative experience.
- The lack of voice acting: this is completely understandable for an indie project.
- An often brutal outcome: bad choices lead extremely quickly to a bloody game over or a premature ending, forcing the player to save very regularly if they do not want to start all over again. But then again, this is common for a visual novel.
IN SUMMARY
TADC: Mind Games is a must-play for any fan of The Amazing Digital Circus. It is an incredibly well-crafted visual novel, featuring excellent visuals, well-executed horror, and a deep respect for the original work. A demo of rare quality, holding a lot of promise for the full version!
