« Beneath its cute platformer appearance lies a highly promising survival horror! »
We got our hands on the incredibly generous demo of Chunky JUMP!, a title developed by Pichon Games
(scheduled for release in 2026). Beneath its appearance as a colorful little retro game lies a formidably effective hybrid experience that cleverly
blends platforming and survival horror.
The demo opens with a strange VHS tape discussing a "reality distortion" experiment via BETA technology, before plunging us into the shoes of Jeff, an employee about to pull a night shift at a
gas station lost in the middle of nowhere (Carrot Gas). To pass the time, a friend left him a "Bird Boy" handheld console and a game cartridge:
Chunky Jump!. Once the cartridge is blown into and inserted into the console, the nightmare and the fun can begin simultaneously.
WHAT WE LOVED
There are plenty of positives to take away from this demo.
Gorgeous Art Direction and animations
The game immediately shines with its pixel art DA. There is a fascinating contrast between the ultra-colorful, cute, and dynamic world of the platformer and the dark, dull, and anxiety-inducing
atmosphere of the gas station in the "real" world. The pixel art animations are superb, whether it's the comic-book style cutscenes, the characters' expressions, or the fluid movements of the
nightmarish monsters (the Ghabbits). Special mention goes to the menus, which are highly aesthetic, easy to read, and pleasant to navigate.
A mysterious and captivating Lore
The story promises to be fascinating. The game doesn't just string levels together; it builds a real mystery around Carrot Town, the "black rain incident" during the Party Leo concert, and that
mysterious voice on the computer at the start of the game. It makes you want to investigate and survive to understand what's going on.
A truly fun hybrid Gameplay
The strength of Chunky JUMP! really lies in its unique gameplay loop:
- Platforming Side: the game on the Bird Boy console is a genuinely good 2D platformer. You jump, avoid spikes, collect coins, and dodge small enemies. It's fluid, responsive, and highly entertaining in its own right.
- Minigames Side: the demo features a minigame where you have to catch chewing gum during the Party Leo concert.
- The touch of tension: having to juggle between the handheld console screen and monitoring the gas station makes the experience highly immersive and interesting.
Incredibly stressful nights
The horror aspect is a total success. The nights are stressful: you have to progress through the platformer while staying alert to ambient sounds. The player must constantly look up from their
screen to shine their flashlight (gotta manage those batteries!) on the station windows to scare away monsters, or hold the click down to screw the
vent grille back on before a creature sneaks through.
Impressive content
For a demo, there is honestly quite a bit of content to get through. It features special versions of the 2 levels included in the game, a scoring system, and a good number of achievements to
unlock. The end of the demo even teases a promising "Endless Mode" with new skins, multiple characters (like Indigo Park, Among Us, or Garten of Banban, via crossovers), and online leaderboards.
IN SUMMARY
Chunky Jump! is an excellent surprise. It pulls off the bold challenge of fusing the nostalgic charm of a retro platformer with the oppressive anxiety of a claustrophobic survival game. With its
generous content, polished aesthetics, and heavy atmosphere, it is highly likely to become a massive hit!
Don't hesitate to try out the demo right now, check out the game page on our website, and wishlist the game on Steam!
