Lore

The R.E.P.O.'s narrative is deliberately minimalist, inviting players to piece together clues from environmental storytelling rather than explicit exposition. So here's everything we know / have deduced about the game.

Extinction of the human Civilization

Many maps, such as McJannek Station, display calendars from the 2090s, suggesting the timeline of humanity's downfall. Skeletons litter the environments, and a worrying lack of food implies catastrophic collapse or widespread famine.

The Huntsman, a blind man with a rifle used as a cane, is one of few humanoid figures encountered—prompting speculation that he may be the sole surviving human

Locations of Interest :

The game offers multiple eerie settings with thematic implications (maps) :

  • Headman Manor - Dominated by the floating Headman, a massive disembodied head. Furniture and household items suggest it was once a curious human dwelling.
  • Swiftbroom Academy - A school hinted to specialize in magic, with graffiti like “IT’S THE HEADMASTER”, suggesting the Headman may have once been the academy’s master.
  • McJannek Station - An arctic science base featuring arctic vehicles, station logos, and hints at research before the end of civilization. Some branding implies ties to Greenland or Denmark

Monsters as Mutated Echoes :

Many theories propose that the monsters are mutated or cursed remnants of humans, transformed by experiments or arcane forces. The Headmaster theory, suggesting he became the Headman through some arcane ritual, is especially popular.

Other lore hints - like shopping lists, televisions, or stray news headlines—suggest the monsters may have originated from cursed scientific objects or human artifacts gone rogue

The Taxman :

The Taxman, the AI commands issuing extraction orders, is yet another puzzle. Some view it as a degenerated administrative AI, originally intended for massive-scale tax or value extraction, now reduced to sending Semibots after bizarre artefacts.

The Taxman’s design aesthetic even echoes the Headman, leading to speculation of a deeper connection, possibly as related entities or broken remnants of one another

Theories & Speculations

These are unconfirmed fan theories, yet they enrich the mystery:

  • 2090s Collapse : Chronological hints (calendars, newspapers) portray sudden cataclysm around late 21st century.

  • Magic or Mutagenic Disaster: Horror elements like haunted artefacts and monsters suggest magical or scientific disaster origins (Dot Esports Reddit).

  • Taxman as Fallen Program: Some fans speculate the AI's mission to collect valuables is a warped vestige of tax-collecting protocols, now without purpose (Reddit).

  • Headmaster as Origin of Monsters: Notably at Swiftbroom Academy, clues point to the Headmaster transforming into Headman and perhaps creating or cursing the game's inhabitants (Reddit)
